  • Sasaki was born with a medical condition that makes her eyes hyper-sensitive to light, causing a visual impairment. She began athletics when she was a fifth-grade elementary school student. In her junior year at junior high school, she participated in a regional tournament at a school for the visually impaired. This experience drew her into the world of para-athletics. Back then, she was a middle-distance runner, but she switched to the 400-meter event when she was a high school junior to prepare for the Paralympic Games. After graduating from a school for the visually impaired, she joined The Toho Bank, Ltd. and improved her skills alongside able-bodied runners. At the 2019 Japan Para Athletics Championships, she set a new Asian record for the 400-meter race. At the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships, she came in 4th place for the same event, earning her a place on the Japanese delegation to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. (August 2020)
