  • Karasawa has a visual impairment as a result of congenital retinal detachment. In 2016, after graduating from a school for people with visual impairments, he learned that runners with visual impairments were successfully competing at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. He resolved to participate in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. With Kazuaki Hoshino and Hiroaki Mogi providing outstanding support as guide runners, Karasawa improved rapidly. At the Indonesia 2018 Asian Para Games, he won the gold medal in the 5000-meter race. He also won the bronze medal in the same event at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships, earning him a place on the Japanese delegation to Tokyo 2020. (August 2020)
