  • When Ito was 34 years old, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The next year, he began competing in athletics and has participated in three Paralympic Games so far. He won two gold medals for the 400- and 800-meter races at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games and three silver medals at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Although he retired after that, he returned to competitive sports in 2017 with the goal of participating in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. In 2019, he won medals for the 100-, 400- and 1500-meter races at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships. This earned him a place on the Japanese delegation to Tokyo 2020. (August 2020)
