  • Ueyonabaru suffered a cervical spine injury in a motorcycle accident when he was 28 years old. As part of his rehabilitation, he was invited to participate in a wheelchair marathon, which led him to start competing at age 31. He first participated in the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, where he won the silver medal for the marathon (T52) race. He then changed to short- and middle-distance races. He continued to compete as a top-level athlete in these events and left outstanding results in both the 400- and 1500-meter races at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships. The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will be his fourth consecutive participation in the Games, where he has secured a place as a member of the Japanese delegation. (August 2020)
