Competitors sprint over a straight, 200m course. There will be 2 events: kayak and va'a (outrigger canoe). While kayakers use a double-bladed paddle to propel the boat, the va'a has a float known as an 'outrigger' attached to the boat, and sailors avoid the floats as they paddle.
Tips on watching games
Canoe will be making its Paralympic debut at the 2016 Rio Games. It is for athletes with physical disabilities (e.g. impairments to the upper and lower limbs). Although two events exist, kayak and va'a, the Rio Paralympics will only hold the kayak event for men and women in 3 classifications (A, TA, LTA). Skillfully paddling the water and gaining speed will be key.
